Dawn on Orcombe

Winter birding is almost pointless on Orcombe but I keep getting drawn back to it in the vain hope that something good is lurking up there. My favourite field at the top of Gore Lane has now been completely smothered in pig manure in preparation for ploughing and presumably spring barley. It still held 9+ snipe, 5+ meadow pipit and c40+ skylark but the white-fronted goose couldn't face it and instead stood forlornly in the field opposite, presumably coming to the conclusion that the golf-course at the Warren smells and tastes better. Other birds this morning included 6 pied wagtail, 1 grey wagtail, 4+ song thrush, c10+ chaffinch and 16+ house sparrow - one of two small flocks on the patch - the other being at Maer Farm.

Looking across to Berry Head from the 'main' field at the top of Gore Lane.
